“Traditional values in a liberal environment: Who is our camper today, and how do we engage with tradition in a contemporary context?”
november 17, 2025 online
On November 17, we had an online conference for camp directors and informal education specialists, conducted by FASZ. The topic was “Traditional values in a liberal environment: Who is our camper today, and how do we engage with tradition in a contemporary context?”
The 30 participants from different countries discussed what are “traditional values“, why might classic stories and characters seem distant to today's youth, How educators can bridge this gap and How can tradition be incorporated without pressure, through conversation, experience, and choice.
participants understood better the importance of pluralism, the connection between traditional and universal values, and showed a desire to introduce more contemporary content to their camps activities.
“It is important for me to see that our camp program allows participants to be in the process of their Jewish self-identification. It was useful to discuss the topic of Jewish identity among modern teenagers and the range of possible bridges between Jewish texts, traditions, and our participants. The meeting helped us understand what tools to use so that traditional stories speak their language.”
